Komoco Motors is one of Singapore's leading motor companies, one that is proud to be a wholly-owned local firm in the industry here. Yet its beginnings on 23rd August 1986 were as humble as just one boss,D18 salesmen selling only two Hyundai models – the Stellar and Excel. But in just two years, Komoco established itself by achieving the best sales figures in Singapore, winning the Motor Traders Association's “Distributor Of The Year 1988” award for selling more than 6,000 Hyundai cars.
Buoyed by its rising stature, Komoco completed a property coup on 11th April 1989 by acquiring a long-term lease on 253-255 Alexandra Road for redevelopment into our current building. The all-new four-storey complex was officially opened on 25th September 1998, and it signalled the start of a new era when Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) handed Komoco the 1999 Regional Distributor Of The Year award.
Such was Komoco's meteoric rise from ground zero to high pedestal that HMC named Komoco as its world's best performer at the turn of the new millennium.
In the aftermath of the 1997 Asian financial crisis, Komoco sold an all-time record of 13,888 units to become the fastest-growing car company in Singapore. From more than 190 dealers around the world, Komoco emerged from the dot that is Singapore to be awarded Hyundai's World Distributor Of Year 2000, prompting none other than the Hyundai supremo himself, Mr Chung Mong-Koo, to pay a visit to the our world-winning premises in September 2001.
And when Komoco won HMC's Asian Distributor Of The Year 2003 for moving 10,999 units, it completed the “Grand Slam” of country, region, continent and world titles – all in a matter of 15 years (1988-2003). Still, never before would the name Hyundai make such a powerful impact on the streets of Singapore than Komoco rolling out fleet after fleet of Sonata taxis for transport conglomerate ComfortDelGro, starting in 2008.
Today, there are more than 10,000 Sonata taxis driving the message home that Hyundai has become a trusted name in the auto world. And in testimony of its acquired status, the Hyundai Avante topped sales in Singapore with 5,225 units in 2009, becoming the people's choice in Singapore, the best-seller of the year.
Komoco's faith in Hyundai products will remain as fervent as ever, even more so today, as HMC upgrades to a new image of “Modern Premium” under its new brand slogan “New Thinking, New Possibilities”.
