Hyundai Motor Company, South Korea’s largest automaker, launched the newest version of its Universe luxury bus at the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show, a year after the company first entered Japan’s coach market with advanced vehicles satisfying Japan’s latest emissions standards.

Universe, which is powered by Hyundai’s proprietary POWERTEC engine, receives an exterior makeover, with front and rear spoilers highlighting the changes.

“In order to fulfill “New Thinking. New Possibilities.”, we have worked extensively to identify and reflect Japanese needs and wants on Universe,” Vice Chairman H.Y. Choi said during the launch. “Strategically, we are going to expand and strengthen our network of sales and services in order to provide the most satisfaction.”

Inside, Universe has been tailored to satisfy the needs of Japanese customers, meeting the highest comfort and safety standards. Passenger features include individual luxury seats and LED lamps throughout the cabin. The driver is aided by the multi-display instrument cluster and the Easy Hill Start (EHS) feature.

The bus, which debuted in Korea in November, is receiving high marks for its luxurious exterior styling, as well as its passenger-convenience features.

The theme of the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show is “Mobility Can Change the World.” The show will run from December 2 to December 11, 2011, at Tokyo Big Sight in Tokyo, Japan. Media days are scheduled for November 30 and December 1, prior to public viewing.

Separately, Hyundai Motor signed an initial agreement on Nov. 24 to supply about 340 of the new Universe buses for officials and athletes at the 2013 Universiade in Kazan, Russia. The Universiade, an Olympic for university students held every two years, will take place between July 10~23 in 2013. Over 14,000 athletes from 140 nations are expected to participate in 2013, making it the largest Universiade ever.
