Hyundai Motor Tops Leading Magazine’s Road Test with New Generation i20
- Hyundai Motor’s New Generation i20 beats four compact class rivals to top rigorous group test by German automotive magazine Auto Zeitung
- Road testers praise driving comfort, driving dynamics and interior dimensions
- Magazine test success follows a number of prestigious industry design awards
March 27, 2017 – Hyundai Motor’s New Generation i20 continues to gain glowing reviews from motoring media around the world, as leading German car title Auto Zeitung ranked the compact car above a number of B-segment rivals.
Following stringent testing alongside established competitors – the Citroen C3, Opel Corsa, Renault Clio, and Volkswagen Polo – Auto Zeitung journalists named the New Generation i20 as ‘best in class’ in the magazine(7th edition, 2017) published 1st of March.
Particular praise was given to the car’s clear and spacious interior and practical storage solutions not seen before in the segment.
Auto Zeitung road testers rated the New Generation i20 ahead of its rivals in the ‘driving comfort’ category, commenting on the car’s “very good seating position” and “comfortable padding”, both of which form a part of a driver-orientated interior.
The New Generation i20 was also ranked highest for ‘driving dynamics’, with particular acclaim for the 1.0 T-GDI three-cylinder turbo gasoline engine in the test model.
The Auto Zeitung was suitably impressed and wrote: “The three-cylinder turbo sounds powerful, it's elastic and high-revving and turns the Hyundai into a top sprinter with a potential maximum speed of 188 km/h.” The magazine also awarded the i20 top marks for quality and craftsmanship.
“The i20 is an important model and Auto Zeitung confirms the confidence we have in it,” says Thomas A. Schmid, Chief Operating Officer at Hyundai Motor Europe. “This is not only proof that we are making good progress in design, quality and craftsmanship, but also shows that we are a leading brand in the competitive B-segment.”
When passing judgment, Paul Englert, Test Editor of Auto Zeitung, said: “With this latest test drive program, the Hyundai i20 consolidates its top position in the small car segment. It is amazing how the Koreans go their own way and offer an excellent all-round product.”
The New Generation i20 also impressed the testers “with its exemplary and economic use of space. Even large and tall occupants have plenty of space in all directions on the front seats.” In the top-of-the-class i20 there is no trace of the limitations normally associated with smaller cars.
This also applies to the outstanding braking system, which can bring the car to a halt in 35.6 metres at 100 km/h – a stopping distance comparable with that of a sports car, the testers write.
This latest recognition for the New Generation i20 comes after the B-segment car was awarded with German magazine Auto Bild’s prestigious Golden Steering Wheel accolade within the ‘Small-Car’ category in 2015 (the awards are voted for by 425,000 car magazine readers across Europe).
The New Generation i20 has also been recognized with the Red Dot Design Award and iF Design Awards in 2015, reflecting the popularity of the car’s striking appearance.
