How do you charge an Electric Car?

Charging an electric car is simple and convenient. Most EV drivers charge their car at home overnight using a dedicated home charger, while public charging stations provide flexible charging on longer journeys. With a growing network of chargers across the UK, keeping your electric car charged can fit easily into your daily routine.

Home charging

When charging at home, you'll need to have the option to park off the street. Once your home charging station is installed, you can plug your EV in overnight, and wake up to a charged battery.

What is Vehicle-to-load (V2L) and how can it power your devices?

Vehicle-to-Load (known as V2L), technology allows you to freely use, or charge electric devices such as electric bicycles, laptops, and even camping equipment whilst out and about.  This technology effectively replaces the need for fuel-powered generators in emergencies or remote locations, allowing you to power your home or camping site with up to 3.6 kW of electricity.

Charge from inside your car.

Using a standard domestic socket, power your device or charge your electrical equipment.
Hyundai IONIQ 5 bidirectional charging.

Or charge from anywhere.

Using the V2L adapter that plugs into the bidirectional exterior charging port, you can power devices up to 3.6 kW even when the car is turned off.

What is Hyundai's Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP)?

Hyundai's Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) gives super-fast charging capabilties to many of our vehicles. The 400V and 800V multi-charging technology gives you flexibility no matter where you are. 
The 800-volt battery is capable of going from 10 to 80 per cent charged in just 18 minutes and with just five minutes of charge, you can gain up to 62 miles of range.
As the charging infrastructure improves, you know that your Hyundai is all set for the future.

    Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), is an automobile that runs purely on electricity and uses a rechargeable battery to power an electric motor. But there are several types of “electrified powertrains”. Electrified powertrains in our production cars include all-electric (BEV), hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and 48V mild hybrid (MHEV).     Consider the potential long-term advantages and cost savings of owning an electric vehicle compared to traditional petrol models. The initial purchase price of an electric vehicle is typically higher than a traditional car but you may pay less on charging, maintenance and taxes. Find out more about costs on our website here.

    The charging time of an electric car varies depending on several factors such as the size of the battery, the charging power, and the type of charger used. Let's take the Hyundai IONIQ 5 as an example. Its 800V battery system and as a range of up to 354 miles2 long-range 84 kWh battery rear-wheel drive. It supports charging at up to 350 kW at a DC ultra-fast charging station.

    All our Hyundai electric vehicles are flexible when it comes to charging, you can charge at home overnight or top up at a fast charging station on the road. The charging time of your electric vehicle will be different depending on if you use a domestic socket, a home charging station such as a wall box or a public fast charging station.

    Electric battery vehicles also have no oil and no transmissions – that means less moving parts and therefore, less maintenance including zero tailpipe emissions, a quiet driving experience, the ability to recharge while you sleep or work, and much more.     Just as there are many factors that affect the fuel efficiency of an internal combustion engine like petrol or diesel, the total electric driving range will be affected by the size of the battery, your driving style, the outside temperature, the use of air conditioning and heating, the number of passengers you are carrying and more.  

    That said, if we take the Hyundai IONIQ 6 as an example, it gives you a driving range of up to 338 miles3 when equipped with the 77 kWh battery version (RWD) according to WLTP cycle.

    The cost of charging an electric car will depend any many factors including whether you are charging at home or at a public charging point. If you are charging at home the cost will vary depending on your energy provider and similarly the public EV chargin cost will depend on the charging station.
