Dahye Youn
Research Engineer at Hyundai Color Team
What are your main responsibilities and achievements at Hyundai?
I work for the Hyundai color team, and I am responsible for the materials, interior/exterior colors and the finishing on cars. The most recent project was the exterior color design of Hyundai first compact SUV KONA, and I wanted to highlight KONA’s character by using high-chromatic colors. I'm proud to know that there are cars everywhere in the world wearing the colorful clothes that I designed.

Based on your own experience, what advice would you give to women considering pursuing a career like yours?

Firstly I think it takes a unique perspective as an industrial designer specializing in color, materials and finish. Other than coming up with a variety of ideas for materials and colors, it is also important to consider the engineering requirements of the automobile. It is important to know how to interpret the latest trends after analyzing the target audience, to implement them in the internal and external experience of the car. Lastly, part of the job is to work together with many others, therefore it is important to love the culture of collaboration.

What are three things you would like to do in 2019?

I would like to successfully develop exciting new color designs for all my current projects, and personally: to lead a healthy life by exercising more and to go on a trip by myself.

“Stand up for your opinion, be open minded and stay curious.”

Vice President, Head of Space Innovation
What are your main responsibilities and achievements at Hyundai?
My team and I are responsible for the Hyundai Motorstudios, the domestic Genesis Spaces and the Motorshows as well as new platforms, which we will launch in the near future. I joined the company last autumn, therefore it is too early to talk about achievements. Generally speaking, it is not about individual successes for me. It is about a common path, into a new direction. It is about aligning Hyundai and strengthening the brand to be a leader in this mobility transformation.. We all have to work together on that. It is also about redefining cooperation and bringing together the strengths of each individual. Women in particular can give an important impulse here. I believe that a women's knowledge and skills are important for any company, especially when we talk about the future of the business.

Based on your own experience, what advice would you give to women considering pursuing a career like yours?

Think and act not only in relation to your career because if you are not convinced of what you are doing, you cannot truly be good at what you are doing. Stand up for your opinion, be open minded and stay curious. Be authentic and honest – only then can you be trustworthy.

What are three things you would like to do in 2019?

Actively shaping the changes at Hyundai. Starting to build up a women’s network at Hyundai. Strengthening the global brand image through our different platforms.

Research Engineer at Robotics Team
What are your main responsibilities and achievements at Hyundai?
I’m working on wearable robots that range from helping someone suffering from paraplegia to walk, assisting the elderly, to supporting and strengthening factory workers in their daily physical routines. I'm currently developing a force sensor that effectively measures the external forces acting on the robot and provides the user with immediate feedback for enhanced safety. As robotics technology is expected to grow further, I firmly believe that our work will help to lead the company into the future.

Based on your own experience, what advice would you give to women considering pursuing a career like yours?

Being an engineer can be really exhausting because you often face many difficulties in the process of development. Some problems are simple and can be solved in just one day, but many are not. My advice is to take things one step at a time because the best way to keep improving is to never be afraid to ask questions.

What are three things you would like to do in 2019?

First of all, I wish to complete the project that I’m working on successfully. It would be great if the sensor I’m developing is implemented in the robots. Second, I would like to develop myself continuously by picking up new hobbies, traveling and studying something new. The third is to find the time to spend with my family, even though I’m very busy. I believe that time moves on without you, and I would like to create beautiful memories with the ones I love.
