In 1976, Hyundai Motor Company created its first independent model, the Pony. The Pony was designed by Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, and after its debut at the Turin Motor Show in Italy in 1974, the 4-door sedan version of the Pony was released in December 1975. In May 1976, the Pony Pickup was released, followed by the station wagon version in April 1977, and the 3-door hatchback version in March 1980. The Pony began to be exported to Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, and Egypt starting in 1976. In January 1976, it was also recorded as the first Korean car sold in the UK. In 1978, it was exported to Belgium, Greece, and the Netherlands. The successor model, the Pony2, released in 1982, was exported to Canada in 1983.
