Prologue: Superstar JJ Giraffe Video

Meet the Sloth Couple

“I can park a car really fast by clicking one button?”

Driving was one of the toughest thing to do for the sloth couple, who are really slow in everything they do.

Let’s take a look at the new technology that changed the lives of the sloths, who used to take all day just to park a car.

Ep 1. Sloth Couple

Autonomous Parking

This system integrates valet parking services with autonomous driving. The automobile lets the passengers off at their desired destination and automatically goes to a parking lot, finds an empty space and parks, or drives to an appointed location on its own.

It is always difficult to find a place to park at department stores, supermarkets, or other places with many people. Waiting to enter a parking lot and looking for a parking space can be tiresome. Will the era of autonomous driving finally free us from this parking stress?

An Autonomous Parking System

Hyundai is developing an autonomous parking system for the age when autonomous cars with level 4 (high level of autonomous driving without human input under selected conditions) are mass-produced.

The car drops off passengers at their destination, finds an empty parking space and parks there on its own. When passengers come back and call the vehicle, the autonomous car identifies their location and goes to pick them up.

Future R&D

This process is achieved through continuous communication between the car and the surrounding infrastructure.

In order for the autonomous driving to be realized, the technological integration and conversion of autonomous driving systems, parking management systems (control infrastructure), precise maps, telematics and high-precision positioning are essential.

Hyundai is currently conducting further R&D to develop the Autonomous Parking Technology by collaborating with companies with related technologies.

Voice Recognition
and Intelligence Agent

A virtual secretary that provides responses and services according to the intent of the driver by identifying everyday dialogues. Furthermore, it studies the driver’s driving patterns to suggest services that the driver may need.

“OO, turn on some music.” “OO, recommend a movie.”

Voice recognition technology has been continuously evolving, and it has become common in phones, household appliances with voice recognition.

Kakao I

Hyundai developed a server voice recognition system based on the voice engine of the AI platform “Kakao I”. Now you are free to access a variety of information such as destinations, popular restaurants and tourist attractions at the sound of your voice.

X SoundHound

At the 2018 CES, Hyundai demonstrated voice secretary services together with SoundHound. On top of general AI services such as making calls, sending and receiving text messages, searches, checking the weather, managing schedules, etc. this system controls vehicle functions such as air conditioners, sunroofs and door locks. Furthermore, you can also use the “Car to Home” service that controls various electronic appliances at home using voice recognition.

Intelligent Agent

The Intelligent Agent that Hyundai is developing cares for the driver more actively than the voice secretary services do (Voice secretary services only respond to the driver’s command). It studies usage patterns and driving situations and proposes services that the driver may need.

Some examples are: suggesting the temperature depending on changes in the weather outside, adjusting the indoor environment while considering the lifestyle patterns of the driver, or proposing the destination first in accordance with the schedule.

Meet the Meerkat Family

“The car can navigate the roads on its own and signal to pedestrians?”
The Meerkat Family is frightened from even the smallest things.

Thanks to Hyundai’s new technologies, the Meerkat Family doesn't always need to be on the alert and can enjoy warm family-time.

Ep 2. Meerkat Family

Window Display

Window Display is a new communication tool for the automobile to communicate with people outside the vehicle using its windshield.

For example, when the vehicle owner enters the vehicle, it displays a welcome message on the windshield, and send messages such as “Cross safely” to passing pedestrians.

Window Display is a technology that emits light on a special film inserted in the windshield so that people outside can view texts and information.

For example, when the vehicle owner enters the vehicle using fingerprint or facial recognition, the car displays the registration screen, authentication results and even a welcome sign for the driver on its window.

Sending Messages

It can also send messages to pedestrians outside the vehicle, such as “Please pass by” or display rescue request messages in case of an emergency.

It will also be possible to alert other vehicles that it is in autonomous driving mode and send messages via its windows in conjunction with voice recognition.

Hyundai is striving to develop such technologies so that automobiles and people can communicate easily and comfortably.

Autonomous Driving

Autonomous driving is a self-driving technology that enables the automobile to detect and determine the surrounding environment and drive safely to its destination without the control of a human driver.

Autonomous Driving Technology Center

Hyundai is spearheading mobility innovation through its newly established “Autonomous Driving Technology Center,” which is dedicated to research and development of self-driving cars.
Rather than joining in the race to show-off our technologies, Hyundai aims at letting more people enjoy safer autonomous vehicles at reasonable prices.
This is because autonomous driving is the first technological step toward fundamentally transforming the individual and society for a new experience that goes beyond the freedom of driving.

From Seoul to PyeongChang

In 2018, Hyundai showcased autonomous driving on the highway for approximately 190 km between Seoul and PyeongChang using a next-generation hydrogen-powered car with autonomous driving technology of level 4. (based on Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) standards)

Right around the corner

This indicates that technology has come a long way to allow not only short drives within the city, but also long-distance drives, implying that the age of autonomous driving vehicles is right around the corner.

Meet Businessman Panda

“The car can check on my health condition?”

Health is of the utmost importance when you get stressed and tired. Businessman Panda, who often is late for work because of chronic fatigue syndrome seems to need it.

Let’s hear about one of his hectic and stressful mornings.

Ep 3. Businessman Panda

Health Care Technology

This system measures the driver’s vital signs to provide health information while also offering care for the driver by linking up with convenience and safety systems.

The Health Care Technology in the vehicle measures one’s heart rate, blood pressure, stress, and fatigue with sensors installed in the steering wheel and backrest of the seat, while providing therapy services such as lighting, music, air conditioning, breathing exercise, etc. according to changes in the person’s health and emotions.
The technology also helps to ensure driver safety by activating emergency rescue services if a health threat such as heart failure is detected, and by encouraging the driver to take a rest if he or she feels drowsy.

Wellness Care Technologies

In 2018, right before the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, Hyundai succeeded in driving 190km from Seoul to PyeongChang with a Nexo-based autonomous driving car that applied wellness care technologies. Using this technology, the autonomous vehicle also measured the passengers’ health state and successfully conducted a video call with a doctor at Gangneung Asan Hospital using the automobile’s AVN.

Future R&D

Preemptive response and consideration for the health of the driver and passengers are essential to easily and comfortably enjoy the new mobility experience.

Hyundai is constantly engaged in R&D to realize optimal health care within the vehicle by converging a wide range of sensors, analysis technologies and connected environments.

Fingerprint Authentication
Entry System

Without using car keys, this bio-authentication system verifies fingerprints to automatically open the door, start the engine and provide the best driving environment for the driver.

Biometric technologies that recognize human fingerprints, irises and facial features are now being used in smartphones and building access systems. In response to such changes in ICT trends, Hyundai is now attempting to change the concept of cars.
In the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe for China, unveiled in the 2018 Guangzhou International Motor Show, a smart fingerprint authentication entry system that can be used to lock and unlock doors and start up vehicles was applied for the first time in the world.

How it works

In this system, a fingerprint sensor captures an image of the person’s fingerprint and uses the analyzed data to compare it to existing data and determine whether the person is registered. The recognition success rate increases when used by the driver with real-time learning.
In addition, the vehicle offers optimized driving environments such as personalized seat adjustments and wing mirror adjustments, as well automatic connection to Bluetooth.
Thanks to strict encryption technologies, the probability for error is 1/50,000, boasting five times stronger security levels than smart keys.

Future R&D

What if even more advanced biometrics systems are applied? Autonomous driving cars may approach the driver for easier boarding and identify the emotions of the driver to set the appropriate music or lighting.
The possibilities of biometrics systems are endless. In addition to the smart fingerprint authentication entry system, Hyundai continues to conduct R&D on other types of biometrics systems as well.
