Hyundai Motor Group Shares Research Findings on African Mobility Industry with University of London’s SOAS

SEOUL, April 29, 2026 – Hyundai Motor Group (the Group) hosted a conference on April 28 with the Centre for Sustainable Structural Transformation (CSST), a research center at School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, to share research findings on Africa’s industrial landscape.

The event, held at the Group’s headquarters in Seoul, brought together global researchers to discuss key issues surrounding the industrial structure of Africa, a continent often called the ‘last frontier market’ due to its vast growth potential and abundant critical minerals.

What Were The Key Topics of The Conference?

Held under the theme ‘The Global Competitiveness and Business Growth Potential of the African Mobility Industry,’ the conference shared the results of research conducted over the past two years.

Key issues in Africa’s industrial structural transformation were extensively covered, including:

  • Energy transition and green hydrogen
  • Critical minerals and infrastructure development
  • Global supply chain reorganization
  • African business models
  • Industrial policy and development finance

Attendees examined the growth potential and challenges of the African economy through various presentations and discussions.

Prominent attendees included CSST co-directors Professor Ha-Joon Chang and Professor Antonio Andreoni; representatives from SOAS, the University of Manchester, Seoul National University, and Yonsei University; and officials from the South African government and public institutions. Representing Hyundai Motor Group were Sung Kim, President and Head of Strategy and Planning Division; Yongseok Shin, Head of HMG Business Intelligence Institute; and Dongwook Kim, Executive Vice President of the Strategic Policy Division

What Is The Background of This Partnership?

SOAS is one of the 17 constituent colleges of the University of London, specializing in the study of Asia and Africa. Established in 2024 within SOAS under the leadership of world-renowned scholar Professor Ha-Joon Chang, CSST researches long-term industrial policies and practical strategies for sustainable growth in Africa.

The Group supported the establishment of CSST to aid research into core elements of Africa’s sustainable growth, including:

  • Supply chains
  • Renewable energy
  • Mineral resources
  • Infrastructure development

This support is part of the Group’s strategy to explore new business and expansion opportunities in various sectors, such as mobility, energy, resources and construction, based on a fundamental understanding of the African market.

The core of ‘Sustainable Structural Transformation’ is to align government policies and corporate strategies with developmental, social and environmental goals. Africa’s structural transformation cannot be achieved by a single industry or entity alone. It requires the government, corporations, public institutions, and local communities to share mutual responsibilities and cooperate under a common vision.

Ha-Joon Chang

Professor and Co-director, CSST at SOAS, University of London

The Group plans to use this conference as a catalyst to continuously explore mid-to-long-term research and cooperation possibilities with domestic and international institutions related to the African mobility industry.
