Russian plant of Hyundai Motor Company

About the plant

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus LLC (HMMR) is the first Russian car manufacturing plant of Hyundai Motor Company. The plant in Russia is the sixth overseas production facility of Hyundai Motor Company following the plants in Turkey, India, China, USA and Czech Republic.

Hyundai Russian plant is the first full-cycle plant of a foreign car manufacturer in the territory of the Russian Federation. Besides conventional shops for welding, painting and assembly a stamping shop is organized on the plant’s site as well. Presence of the own stamping shop will allow the plant maintain high quality level of the stamped panels and better control the net cost and promptly switch to manufacturing of new car models.

The Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus plant is equipped with modern high-tech facilities, which provide high level of automation of the production processes. On a number of stations, for example, in the welding, the automation ratio estimates 80% and more. The car manufacturing plant of Hyundai will achieve high level of localization from the outset thanks to the eleven car components supplying plants of Korean companies situated in the North-West region, as well as to cooperation with a number of foreign and Russian companies.

The Hyundai Russian plant aims to produce cars of the highest quality. For this propose HMMR not only installed computerized equipment, but also hired talented employees and sent them for abroad trainings to Hyundai Motor Company’s plants in the Czech Republic and the Republic of Korea, where they were able to improve their professional skills.

The Grand Opening ceremony of the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus plant was held on September 21st, 2010. The start of mass production of cars at the Hyundai plant in Saint-Petersburg is planned for the next January. Already by the end of 2011 the company is planning to achieve the maximum manufacturing capacity which equals 105 thousand vehicles a year, with the perspectives of subsequent increase of this amount up to 150 thousand cars per year, provided that it will operate in three shifts.

The company’s plant in Saint-Petersburg will begin manufacturing with a new model of Hyundai sedan of C-segment, specially tailored to the requirements of the Russian customers.

Full-cycle production plant

At the present time the manufacturing capacities of Hyundai’s Russian plant allow production of 150 thousand vehicles per year. There are 4 main shops for stamping, welding, painting and assembly, the own test track, at which each manufactured car will be undergoing a series of road tests. And, to enhance logistics quality of the plant there are several supplying companies which are situated in Saint-Petersburg and in the Leningrad region.

The plant’s stamping shop consists of two production lines: blanking and stamping. At the first one the coils of steel are rolled out, the steel gets cleaned and even and is finally cut into blanks. The blanks then proceed to the stamping line of tandem type, which consists of four mechanical presses. The first, most powerful, draws up the blanks shaping the volume forms of future body panels. The following three presses of less power complete treatment of the parts by trimming the surplus of metal, piercing the steel and flanging the edges. The cumulated load of the stamping line estimates 5100 tons.

The whole process of operations in the welding shop of Hyundai’s Russian plant is computerized. The shop is visually divided into two levels. At the lower one all the maneuvering and welding works are conducted, at the upper one there is installed an electronic monorail system which delivers the parts to their welding stations. In the welding shop the stamped parts are connected into complete body frames, shaping the forms of future cars. Overall there are 52 robots, most of them operating on the body-build line, which requires extra precision of welding. Besides that, at the beginning of this line the VIN is engraved on the bottom panel, which determines the future of the car through the rest of the manufacturing process.

In the painting shop of HMMR there’s installed the most advanced equipment which allows use of ecological water-based paint colours. The vehicle body called a body-in-white undergoes preparation: it is cleaned and covered with antirust protecting layers by the means of electrodeposition. Then it is applied with primer, which evens the surface, and after that a base coat and a final clear coat providing shine are applied upon it. After each of the stages of painting the car body is dried in special ovens.

Manufacturing of a car completes in the assembly shop, where all parts get finally attached to the body, the engine and drive train are connected in the chassis area, the car is equipped with necessary interior parts and filled with technological liquids such as oil, gasoline and coolant. Then it is adjusted at special stands, after that undergoes necessary tests, including water test and test-driving on the track, and eventually passes the quality checks.  No Hyundai vehicle manufactured at the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus plant leaves the shop’s territory if even a slightest defect is revealed. Each fault is eliminated, and the cars of high quality are prepared to be sent to the client.

Manufacturing localization

In accordance with the requirements of the Government of the Russian Federation the car manufacturing plant of Hyundai Motor Company will have high level of production localization primarily thanks to the Korean suppliers of parts which have their factories in the North-West region, as well as to cooperation with a number of international and Russian companies. There are the workshops of two supplying companies situated precisely in the territory of the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus plant. These are Hyundai Hysco which purchases, sorts out and delivers cold-rolled steel to the stamping shop, and Hyundai Mobis responsible for manufacturing of big module car components for installation in the assembly shop. Two kilometers away from the HMMR plant there is the Industrial park of Hyundai Motor Company’s suppliers, which includes 7 companies (among them Deawon, Donghee, Doowon, Sejong, Shinyoung, NVH, Sungwoo Hitech). Besides them there are the plants of two more Korean companies (Yura and Il Tube) situated in the North-West region.
