Hyundai Motor Group Hosts Its First ‘HMG Developer Conference’ Focusing on Smart Mobility Solutions

SEOUL, November 10, 2021 – Hyundai Motor Group (The Group) is hosting its first online ‘HMG Developer Conference’ for software developers in South Korea, focusing on the mobility industry, today and tomorrow (November 10-11). The forward-thinking conference will be streamed via a dedicated website, open for participation to industry, media, and the wider public.

With the main theme of ‘Journey for Smart Mobility Solutions’, the inaugural conference will provide a platform for the Group’s R&D leaders to share technology development insights with developers and promote active communication and mutual growth.

The conference includes a keynote speech, developer presentations and external speaker sessions. Around 70 outstanding developers from Hyundai Motor, Kia, Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai AutoEver, and five start-ups (MOBINN, Mesh Korea, SuperMove, Mobiltech and mAy-I) selected through a pre-application screening process, are presenting the latest technologies on 50 different topics covering Artificial Intelligence (AI), mobility and software.

At the start of the conference, Albert Biermann, President and Head of the Group’s R&D Division, gave an opening speech, providing an overview of the Group’s mobility technology development. In his speech, Biermann explained how Hyundai Motor Group is accelerating the development of Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) to provide a hyper-connected and integrated platform which connects users with vehicles and encompasses mobility, AI, and connected service and how many excellent developers are joining this important journey.

The Group’s R&D leaders are also speaking at the conference to share the Group’s achievements and plans during the conference.

As the first day’s keynote speaker, Paul Choo, Senior Vice President and Head of the Group’s Electronics Tech Unit, presented about the Group’s innovative technologies such as the E-GMP electric vehicle platform, hydrogen fuel-cell system, high-performance N Brand, connected car and robotics, and how these technologies can improve the quality of our lives.

Woongjun Jang, Head of Autonomous Driving Center, presented about the status and direction of autonomous driving software technology development. Dong Jin Hyun, Head of the Group’s Robotics Lab, who oversees the development of wearable robots VEX and CEX and service robot DAL-e, gave a presentation on the importance of robotics technologies and a look at a blueprint of mechanisms in development.

In addition, a number of leaders in charge of development at the Group’s core technology R&D sites gave presentations on the first day of the conference, including HyunJu Bae, Head of Chassis Control Development Group; Haeyoung Kwon, Head of Infotainment Development Group; and Kyung-Won Suh, Head of Fuel Cell Performance Development Group.

Tomorrow (the second day), Chang Song, President and Head of Transportation-as-a-Service (TaaS) Division, will present the Group's vision for TaaS, which is gaining more importance in the field of smart mobility. President Song will explain the Group’s future vision of TaaS and how software connects mobility services, autonomous technology, eco-friendly energy, big data and various other services and how everyone can benefit from safe and convenient methods of movement through the connection of people, objects, and networks.

Leading experts from relevant fields are joining the conference to share insights and further promote mobility evolution with the R&D community. During the external speaker session, MIT professor Daniela L. Rus, a world-renowned scholar in the field of AI and an advisory professor for the Group, will give a special lecture on the status of robotaxi technology. Professor Song Han, also from MIT and currently conducting industry-university research on AI for autonomous driving, will also give a special lecture on machine leaning and deep learning for developers.

Dr. Youngcho Chi, President & Chief Innovation Officer of the Group, will wrap up the conference with an introduction into the Group’s plans for Developer Relations (DR) to further enhance communication with the R&D community.

During the conference, nine participating companies, including the Group, will run an online booth to recruit developers. By launching a conference and channel to interact with local developers, the Group expects to discover and secure promising talents amid an intensifying R&D competition.

Meanwhile, the Group is making various efforts to strengthen and internalize software technology capabilities in the world where electrification, autonomous driving, connectivity and digitalization are rapidly progressing. The Group plans to continue expanding its technology brand value and provide a forum to promote communication between internal and external developers.
