SEOUL, October 29, 2026 – Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai Motor) today announced it sold 931,211 units globally in the third quarter and 2,879,590 vehicles in the first nine months of 2026, as the company readies an ambitious product offensive. Hybrid sales grew 19 percent globally to 524,437 units in the first nine months and North America hybrid sales grew 56 percent during the period. Electrified vehicles (EV, HEV, PHEV) accounted for more than one quarter of total global sales.
Strong hybrid demand, particularly in North America, helped support sales amid severe production losses from a prolonged strike in Korea, supply chain constraints from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, and heightened competition in Europe and South America.
These disruptions caused sales to fall 5 percent year-to-date compared to 2025.
“This is one of the most challenging periods in the auto industry and our teams have shown tremendous resilience. Record third-quarter sales in the U.S., growth in India, and strong hybrid demand demonstrate the strength of our business,” the company said. “We are starting the largest product expansion in our history and continuing to invest in local production to better respond to changing market conditions. Our mid-term plan targets remain on track.”
Hyundai’s response to the challenging business environment includes launching more than 100 new or refreshed products through 2030, across countries, powertrains, and price points. Investments in expanding production capacity by 1.27 million units and expanding supplier networks will help Hyundai manage future disruptions and give the company flexibility to respond.
Third-Quarter Highlights
North America continued its strong performance with sales of 325,098 units, up 3 percent year-over-year, powered by record hybrid sales. In the United States, Hyundai Motor reported sales of 246,896, its best third quarter ever. Hybrid sales in the U.S. grew 35 percent in the quarter, and increased hybrid demand also drove sales in Canada and Mexico.
India was the fastest-growing region with sales increasing nearly 10 percent compared to the previous year. Domestic sales and exports from India grew 11 percent in September to 77,916, the highest-ever monthly total.
Regional Performance
North America
Total sales in North America rose 3 percent in the first nine months, outperforming the broader market, buoyed by strong demand for hybrid vehicles and core models, such as Tucson and Elantra. Sales for the first nine months of 2026 reached 920,555 units, the best in the region's history. Hybrid sales grew 56 percent to 229,187 units during the period, underlining the strength of Hyundai’s full lineup of vehicles and diversified powertrain strategy.
In the United States, Hyundai and Genesis delivered 759,197 units in the nine-month period, up 3 percent. Santa Fe and Sonata hybrids both set September sales records. Rapidly growing hybrid demand in Mexico and Canada continued to bolster sales in those countries.
North America remains the core of Hyundai’s growth, with the region accounting for 58 of Hyundai’s over 100 planned product launches by 2030. In the U.S. alone, Hyundai is expanding manufacturing capacity by 500,000 units. The Hyundai Motor Group is investing $26 billion through 2028, resulting in 25,000 new direct jobs. The company plans to further expand its mix of hybrid powertrains, targeting 50 percent of sales by 2030.
Central and South America
Central and South America grew 5 percent in the first nine months to 240,683 units. Sales in the largest market, Brazil, were flat, reflecting the increasing competition from new entrants to the region. Sales of the all-new i20 hatchback began in July, and the vehicle is produced locally at Hyundai Motor’s plant in Piracicaba.
India
In India, Hyundai sold 150,039 units in the third quarter and 444,301 units in the nine-month period, both a nearly 10 percent increase year-over-year. Hyundai continues to be a strong presence in the Indian automotive market and is also an important export hub. India is a key pillar of Hyundai’s global product offensive, with 26 launches planned by 2030, beginning with the all-new Bayon SUV that goes on sale in October.
Hyundai Motor Group is investing in expanding its presence in India, planning to spend $15.5 billion to grow manufacturing capacity, local supplier cultivation and R&D infrastructure between 2026 and 2032. A recently inaugurated factory in Pune expands Hyundai Motor India’s production capacity by 170,000 units, with plans to grow to 320,000 by 2030, for a total production capacity of 1.1 million units in India.
Europe
In Europe, Hyundai delivered 122,345 units in the third quarter and 415,233 units in the nine-month period, as the market faces challenges from newer entrants and customers are drawn to small electric vehicles. The newest addition to Hyundai’s expanding EV lineup, the IONIQ 3, is built in Türkiye, reinforcing the company’s commitment to localizing production.
The IONIQ 3 is one of 41 launches from Hyundai and Genesis planned in Europe through 2030. Hyundai is expanding electrified offerings across its lineup and targeting a 30 percent reduction in EV battery costs.
Asia Pacific
Sales in Asia Pacific were 39,074 units in the third quarter, as competition from new market entrants accelerated. For the nine-month period, sales were 129,695. Demand for hybrid and EV models continued to grow, and sales of Hyundai EVs more than doubled in the third quarter.
Middle East and Africa
The Middle East and Africa region continued to face inventory shortages, as conflict around the Red Sea and Strait of Hormuz disrupted maritime traffic. Third-quarter sales were 56,495 units and nine-month sales were 179,938 units. Hyundai continues to work closely with its distributors to manage inventory and logistics throughout the period and is positioned to recover as conditions stabilize.
China
In China, sales totaled 14,674 units in the third quarter and 62,515 units in the nine-month period, as the company continued to transform its business in the highly competitive Chinese market. Hyundai plans 22 product launches in China through 2030, starting with the IONIQ V that went on sale at the end of September.
Hyundai is developing products specifically tailored to Chinese customers and plans to introduce a new SUV model next year. The company is committed to expanding its model lineup in China with a goal of reaching 500,000 units of sales.
Korea
Sales for the Korea business division totaled 133,515 units in the third quarter and 455,113 units through the first nine months, reflecting the severe impact of the strike. The company is committed to investing in its home market, adding 200,000 units of production capacity to reinforce Korea’s position as a global manufacturing hub for Hyundai.
The Hyundai Motor Group is investing KRW 125 trillion in its home market to reinforce Korea’s technology leadership in electrification, software-defined vehicles, and physical AI.
Hyundai and Genesis will launch 49 products in Korea through 2030, including the all-new Grandeur, Avante (Elantra), and Tucson, along with continued expansion of its electrified lineup.
Genesis
Genesis sales rose 6 percent to 22,645 vehicles in the U.S., the brand's strongest third-quarter performance in the market.
In August, Genesis unveiled its latest flagship, the all-electric GV90 SUV, representing the latest expression of the luxury brand’s capabilities. The brand has grown rapidly, becoming the fastest luxury marque to reach one million cumulative sales, with a presence in more than two dozen markets.
Genesis will continue to expand its lineup with the GV80 hybrid and an extended-range EV coming in 2027.
Future business
Hyundai will begin to show concrete steps in the market towards becoming a physical AI company, by investing in robotics and self-driving vehicles, through the rest of the year.
Hyundai Motor Group’s robotaxi company Motional is partnering with Uber and aims to start driverless operations in Las Vegas by the end of 2026, making use of a fleet of IONIQ 5 SUVs.
Production of the first IONIQ 5 robotaxis manufactured in the U.S. for robotaxi company Waymo will begin this year.
In the robot business, Hyundai continues to work with HMG group company Boston Dynamics to prepare for commercial production of the Atlas humanoid robot.
