SEOUL, July 16, 2026 – Hyundai Motor Group shareholders are pursuing the acquisition of SoftBank's entire stake in Boston Dynamics pursuant to the parties' existing agreements.
As part of its long-term robotics strategy, Hyundai Motor Group had been evaluating opportunities to increase its ownership in Boston Dynamics with the aim of further strengthening its robotics capabilities and collaboration with Boston Dynamics. Following SoftBank's notice of the exercise of its put option, the relevant shareholders are reviewing matters arising from their contractual rights and obligations under the existing agreements through their respective internal governance and approval processes.
The contemplated transaction is expected to further support collaboration across Hyundai Motor Group's robotics-related businesses and enhance the Group's ability to execute its long-term robotics strategy. Hyundai Motor Group and Boston Dynamics will continue working together to strengthen competitiveness in robotics and advance the development of AI-powered robotics technologies and related ecosystems.
Hyundai Motor Group is building an End-to-End (E2E) AI Robotics Value Chain that combines Boston Dynamics’ expertise in AI Robotics with the Group’s manufacturing capabilities, mobility technologies and global value chain. Through this integrated approach, the Group aims to accelerate the development, validation and commercialization of Physical AI technologies and robotics solutions.
Recent demonstrations of Boston Dynamics’ Atlas® humanoid robot have highlighted progress in mobility, whole-body coordination and object manipulation, including the delivery of the ceremonial match ball during a FIFA World Cup 2026™ match and the lifting and transport of a 23-kilogram compact refrigerator. These demonstrations are expected to support the continued validation of Atlas across a range of potential industrial use cases.
Under its robotics vision, “Partnering Human Progress,” Hyundai Motor Group aims to advance human-centered AI Robotics designed to assist and collaborate with people while enhancing safety, productivity and operational efficiency. Hyundai Motor Group currently plans to deploy Atlas at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) beginning in 2028, initially supporting parts sequencing tasks as part of its human-centric smart factory innovation initiatives. Subject to continued technology validation, operational readiness and business requirements, Atlas is expected to support an expanded range of manufacturing processes, with its application extending to component assembly by 2030.
All transaction-related details described above are based on the current terms of the existing agreements. Following the exercise of the put option, the relevant shareholders are reviewing matters arising from their contractual rights and obligations under existing agreements through their respective governance and approval processes. Any participation in the contemplated transaction will be undertaken pursuant to such contractual rights and obligations and will remain subject to applicable approvals, settlement procedures and decisions by the relevant parties. The resulting allocation of shares among the relevant parties will be determined in accordance with the existing agreements and the respective decision-making processes of the parties involved.
