V2L Vehicle-to-Load: A Revolutionary Technology Turning Electric Cars into Power Sources

V2L

The automotive industry is undergoing a major revolution—vehicle electrification. Automotive manufacturers are racing to innovate by developing eco-friendly electric vehicles that also provide an enjoyable driving experience. One technology feature that has also captured attention is Vehicle-to-Load (V2L).

Hyundai has become a pioneer in the practical and mass application of V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) technology through its line of electric vehicles such as the Hyundai IONIQ 5, Hyundai IONIQ 6, and the all-new Hyundai KONA Electric. With V2L, electric cars not only store energy to move but can also channel that energy back out to power various electronic devices—much like a giant power bank. Imagine being able to power a rice cooker from your car while camping!

What is V2L (Vehicle-to-Load)?

V2L or Vehicle-to-Load is an advanced technology that enables electric vehicles to serve as power sources for electronic devices or other equipment. By using the energy stored in the car’s battery, V2L allows users to supply electricity to various devices such as laptops, mobile phones, or even household appliances. This technology doesn't just serve to charge the vehicle—it also offers a flexible solution for power needs outside the car.

How V2L Works in Converting Battery Energy

Hyundai integrates the V2L feature into its electric vehicles through a platform called E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform). This platform enables bi-directional charging: it can charge and discharge power. With V2L, an electric car functions like a portable generator—but quiet and emission-free—ready to provide energy whenever needed. The main benefits of V2L are evident in daily life, such as while camping, being in remote areas with limited electricity, or even for everyday activities.

V2L offers exceptional flexibility for EV owners to utilize the backup energy stored in their vehicles. In an age where technology is increasingly focused on sustainability, V2L is an innovation that supports an eco-friendly lifestyle in a highly practical way.

V2L Technology in the All-new Hyundai KONA Electric

The all-new KONA Electric is one of the models equipped with V2L technology. With this feature, the KONA Electric isn't just an electric car—it also serves as a reliable portable power source. The all-new KONA Electric is equipped with a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of up to 66 kWh, capable of supplying a significant amount of power while on the go.

V2L Features in the All-new KONA Electric

Indoor V2L: Fitur Indoor V2L< allows you to use power from your EV’s battery to operate electronic devices inside the cabin. Typically, a 12V socket located under the rear seat can be used to plug in various equipment such as laptops, small electronics, or even camping tools. This feature is especially useful when you need extra power inside the car—for example, when working remotely or while camping. The outdoor V2L output can reach up to 3.6 kWh.

Outdoor V2L: Meanwhile, the Outdoor V2L feature enables you to use your EV’s battery to power electronic devices outside the vehicle. An adapter is usually connected to the vehicle’s charging port, allowing you to plug in larger devices, such as power tools, party equipment, or even charge another electric vehicle.

Outdoor V2L is extremely useful in situations where portable power is needed—such as working in remote locations, hosting outdoor events, or in emergency scenarios.

To activate and use the V2L feature in the KONA Electric, you simply need to connect your device to the V2L port located on the car. The process is very straightforward and practical.

Additionally, the all-new KONA Electric offers a driving range of up to 600 km on a single charge, further enhancing the practicality and flexibility of this electric car—not only as an environmentally friendly vehicle but also as a practical and multifunctional tool.
