Inaugural 3D printing challenge by Hyundai Motor Group and NTU sparks innovative ideas for IONIQ 5 car accessories and parts

SINGAPORE, 25 November 2022 - 3D Printing Competition Award Ceremony, jointly organized by the Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) and NTU (Nanyang Technology University), was held on 25 Nov 2022 at Marina Bay Singapore.

The competition has started since Nov 2021 and participants, which comprised of the public, enterprises, and students across various institutions in Singapore, were challenged to design Singapore oriented a car accessory or part for Hyundais IONIQ 5, which is the first EV manufactured in Singapore. The competition saw close to 100 entries. Evaluating three criteria (innovative design, convenience and uniqueness of Singapore culture), 7 teams were awarded with cash prize.

We are pleased to hold 3D Printing Competition with NTU. We believe the power of open innovation collaboration as this provides the opportunity of technological advancement in the automotive industry, enabling the development of cutting-edge technology and turn a possibility to a reality, said JinHyuk Choi, Vice President and Head of Sales Innovation Group at HMGICS.

Speaking at the award ceremony, NTU Vice President (Innovation & Entrepreneurship) and Dean, College of Engineering, Prof Louis Phee said, I believe this 3D printing challenge has helped spurred the innovative use of technology in automotive engineering, and we certainly hope to see more of such competitions in the future.

The 3D Printing Competition, jointly organized by Hyundai Motor Group and NTU, is an initiative under a partnership announced in October 2020. Under the tie-up, the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center in Singapore (HMGICS) will collaborate with NTU to conduct a series of joint research projects focusing on advanced solutions for the manufacturing of electronic vehicles (EVs) and to develop future mobility solutions.

HMGICS is pleased to hold the open innovation competition for Singaporean and will continue to explore future mobility innovations by growing together with Singapore.
