One of the first IONIQ Electric owners in Australia will open her 10-star efficiency rating house as part of Sustainable House Day on Sunday, 15 September.

Mrs. Carolyn Honey and her husband Garth found the ideal vehicle in the IONIQ Electric, when they went looking to switch from internal combustion driving, to take advantage of the excess solar power generated by their home solar installation.

“I wanted an efficient electric vehicle for city commuting at the right price. The IONIQ Electric was the first car to arrive in Australia that ticked all the boxes, and I felt comfortable driving it on the test drive,” Mrs. Honey said.

Staff from Melbourne’s Doncaster Hyundai, where Mrs. Honey bought her new IONIQ Electric, will attend the open home with a Kona Electric SUV, to showcase the Hyundai electric vehicle range.

“We’re delighted that we could provide the ideal vehicle for the Honeys’ sustainable lifestyle in the form of a new Hyundai IONIQ Electric,” Doncaster Hyundai Dealer Principal, Jonathan Pau said.

“The IONIQ Electric is the perfect fit for their garage, being powered exclusively by energy from their home’s solar installation,” Mr. Pau said.

The Honeys’ switch to an EV has proved a seamless and enjoyable experience.

“The IONIQ is a bit bigger than what I was used to driving – I was previously driving a Golf and a Corolla – but it feels agile and much more responsive,” Mrs. Honey said.

“I don't really notice how nice the IONIQ is to drive until I hop back into an internal combustion car, where there is a disconcerting split-second delay and a jolt on acceleration.”

“Going Premium was worth it. I upgraded for the safety features but I am really appreciating those seat warmers in winter, especially since they do not affect the range as much as normal car heating does,” Mrs. Honey added.

Inspired by previous Sustainable House Days, the Honeys have retrofitted their 1960s home in Burwood East to minimise their use of grid power, and will open their home to the public for a third time as part of this year’s Sustainable House Day.

Sustainable House Day gives visitors the opportunity to visit some of Australia’s leading green homes, ranging from renovations and new builds, to off-the-grid tree-changes and DIY/experimental properties, as well as receiving unbiased advice from their owners.

Running for almost two decades, Sustainable House Day 2018 saw 33,000 people visit 226 homes across Australia.
