2020 IONIQ has arrived, introducing refreshed styling, upgraded standard equipment, and a new battery and motor combination for IONIQ Electric that delivers enhanced performance and an extended 311km (WLTP) all-electric range.

Styling revisions for 2020 IONIQ include redesigned front and rear lighting, front grilles, and new alloy wheels, to create a fresh and progressive look.

2020 IONIQ features a new dashboard boasting premium soft-touch finishes, ambient lighting in Premium and Electric versions, and a new, tablet-style multimedia unit.

The larger, 10.25-inch satellite navigation multimedia system headlines the equipment upgrades, and incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity.

Hyundai’s extensive SmartSense™ safety suite continues in 2020 IONIQ, now with the standard inclusion of High Beam Assist and an upgraded Driver Attention Warning system featuring Leading Vehicle Departure Alert.

2020 IONIQ benefits from a refreshed local chassis tune designed to deliver a supple, refined ride and a consistent drive experience across the three powertrain variants.

Hyundai’s first-ever dedicated eco vehicle continues to offer customers the unique choice of three eco-friendly electrified powertrains – Electric, Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid – in a refined compact five-door fastback package.

The range-opening 2020 IONIQ Hybrid provides an accessible taste of electric motoring, with its petrol/electric hybrid system helping it achieve an exceptional 3.4L/100km fuel (Hybrid Elite; ADR 81/02 combined cycle).

2020 IONIQ Plug-in Hybrid continues to offer the ability for electric-only trips up to 63 kilometres (ADR 81/02 and NEDC standard) from its overnight fast-charge-capable 8.9kWh li-ion polymer battery.

Combining an electric vehicle (EV) experience with the benefit of a range-extending hybrid petrol powertrain, the IONIQ Plug-In Hybrid is Australia’s most fuel efficient vehicle.*

A larger 38.3kWh battery gives the 2020 IONIQ Electric a pure-electric range of 311km (WLTP), an increase of 33 percent compared with the outgoing 2019 IONIQ Electric (204km WLTP).

With its increased range, outstanding efficiency, a more powerful 100kW synchronous motor, and 100kW DC fast-charging capability, 2020 IONIQ Electric is an appealing pure electric alternative to a conventional-engine vehicle.

2020 IONIQ Range Overview

POWERTRAINS

Eco powertrain overview

Every IONIQ variant features a high-voltage lithium-ion polymer battery-powered electric motor. IONIQ Electric variants offer a pure electric vehicle experience, and IONIQ Hybrid and Plug-in variants utilise Atkinson cycle petrol engines to provide additional power.

a. Based on Australian Design Rule 81/02 static laboratory combined average city and highway cycle test (same as New European Driving Cycle test as defined by UN/ECE R101), and may not reflect real life driving results. Real life driving results will vary depending on a combination of driving style, type of journey, vehicle configuration, battery age and condition, use of vehicle features (i.e. heating and/or air conditioning), as well as operating, environmental and climate conditions. ADR 81/02 and NEDC test results are meant for comparison purposes only.

Based on WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light-Duty Vehicles Test Procedure) static laboratory combined average city and highway cycle test, which measure, energy consumption, range and emissions in passenger vehicles, designed to provide figures closer to real-world driving behaviour. 2020 IONIQ ELECTRIC

Upsized 38.3kWh Lithium-ion Polymer battery

2020 IONIQ Electric utilises an upsized 38.3kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion polymer battery, which replaces the 28kWh air-cooled battery of the preceding model, to make it an even more convincing zero-emissions alternative to a conventional-engined car.

The new high energy density battery delivers improved output (allowing higher electric motor performance), whilst the implementation of the water cooling system allows better temperature control and improved long-term durability.

Extended 311km all-electric range (WLTP)

Increased battery capacity allows the 2020 IONIQ Electric to achieve a real-world, all-electric range of up to 311km (up from 204km) when tested to WLTP standards (373km when laboratory tested to ADR 81/02 & NEDC standards), making it significantly more practical and capable than the preceding model.

Upgraded 100kW electric motor

Complementing the upgraded battery, 2020 IONIQ Electric now features a higher output 100kW permanent-magnet synchronous motor, which offers improved high-speed performance compared with the outgoing model.

Peak torque of 295Nm is available at nearly all engine speeds, which gives the IONIQ off-the-line acceleration far in excess of combustion engine vehicles of similar outputs.

100kW DC fast charging

2020 IONIQ’s 37 percent greater battery capacity means DC fast charging times have increased. Using a commercial 100kW DC fast charging station the IONIQ Electric can be charged from empty up to 80 percent in as little as 54 minutes (or 57 minutes when connected to a 50kW fast charging station). With the establishment of charging infrastructure in Australia, intercity travel will be a reality.

Plug-in charging (AC or DC)

The capacity of the on-board AC charger has been increased to 7.2 kW, which allows the 38.3kWh high-voltage battery to be recharged in as little as 6 hours 5 minutes when connected to a charging station of equal or higher capacity. With the installation of a personal charging station, this will allow a full overnight charge at home.

In circumstances where a charging station is not available, the standard In-Cable Control Box (ICCB) in the boot of every IONIQ Electric allows the battery to be charged via any household 240V AC outlet. It takes approximately 17 hours 30 minutes to reach full charge when plugged in using the ICCB.

SAFETY

Occupant safety is engineered into the 2020 Hyundai IONIQ range from the ultra-rigid body monocoque outwards.

A comprehensive suite of airbags includes dual front airbags for the driver and passenger, front side (thorax) airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, and a driver’s knee airbag.

2020 Hyundai IONIQ features integrated Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) systems.

In addition to these safety fundamentals, Hyundai IONIQ occupants benefit from the standard inclusion of the Hyundai SmartSense™ active safety suite.

SmartSenseTM advanced safety technologies

2020 IONIQ’s standard SmartSenseTM advanced safety suite introduces new safety features, as well as upgrades to several existing features, to reinforce the model’s leadership position in the Australian eco vehicle market.

High Beam Assist (HBA): New SmartSenseTM feature

High Beam Assist (HBA) scans the road ahead of IONIQ using the front windscreen-mounted camera, monitoring for street lights, as well as the headlights and taillights of surrounding vehicles in front.

Upon detection, the system automatically adjusts headlight range, switching between high and low beam.

HBA is operational when the light switch is placed in the Auto position, with the lever pushed forward away from the driver.

Lane Following Assist (LFA): New SmartSenseTM feature

Lane Following Assist (LFA) function is available across all 2020 IONIQ models, except for Hybrid Elite.

Lane Following Assist (LFA) detects lane markers on the road using the front windscreen-mounted camera, and provides steering assistance to ensure the vehicle stays in the centre of the lane.

If activated via the User Settings menu in the Supervision cluster, LFA is active whenever Smart Cruise Control is operating, lane markers are detected, and the vehicle speed is less than 180km/h.

Driver Attention Warning (DAW): Upgraded SmartSenseTM feature

Driver Attention Warning (DAW) uses the windscreen-mounted camera to monitor the vehicle’s position within the lane, whilst tracking steering and braking inputs, and time since last break, and operates at speeds of 60km/h and above.

Should the system detect careless driving, such as sudden steering or braking inputs, or the driver’s inability to keep within a lane, the Attention Level display on the cluster will continually decrease.

Should the level decrease to a certain threshold, the DAW system will recommend that the driver take a break.

2020 IONIQ now also features Leading Vehicle Departure Alert, which monitors the vehicle ahead when IONIQ is stopped in traffic.

If the vehicle ahead drives away, and the IONIQ driver fails to follow, the system will sound a gentle chime to alert the driver.

Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go (SCC w/ S&G): Upgraded SmartSenseTM feature

The Stop & Go Smart Cruise Control (SCC) function is now available across all 2020 IONIQ models, except for Hybrid Elite.

SCC utilises the front radar sensor to detect the speed and distance of vehicles ahead of IONIQ. SCC then automatically maintains a safe distance to the vehicle ahead, up to a speed pre-set by the driver (of between 30km/h and 180km/h).

The Stop & Go function allows SCC to work in stop-start traffic, bringing the vehicle to a complete stop when appropriate, and automatically (if within 3 seconds) accelerating it back to the original set speed.

If the vehicle is stationary for more than 3 seconds, SCC w/ Stop & Go will prompt the driver to continue cruise conditions by operating the steering wheel switches.

Smart Cruise Control is no longer offered in IONIQ Hybrid Elite.

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA): Carryover SmartSenseTM feature

When active, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) utilises the front radar sensor and windscreen-mounted camera to detect vehicles and pedestrians in front of the vehicle.

FCA is active above speeds of 10km/h, up to speeds of 70km/h (pedestrians) and 180km/h (vehicles). If a potential collision is detected, the FCA system will sound a warning chime and display a warning in the Supervision cluster.

Additionally, FCA is capable of automatically applying the vehicle’s brakes in the case of a potential collision (where no driver intervention is detected after a FCA system warning).

The system attempts to bring the vehicle to a complete stop if activated up to speeds of 70km/h (pedestrians) or 80km/h (vehicles). Between speeds of 80km/h and 180km/h, when activated, FCA will slow the vehicle in order to reduce the severity of the collision.

Lane Keeping Assist - Line (LKA-L): Carryover SmartSenseTM feature

Lane Keeping Assist - Line (LKA-L) system consists of two modes - Lane Departure Warning (LDW) mode, and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) mode.

At speeds of 60km/h or above, LDW uses the windscreen-mounted camera to detect lane markings and monitor the vehicle’s position in the lane. Should the vehicle stray from the intended lane without indicators being activated, audible and visual warnings will be issued.

LKA can be activated at speeds of 60km/h or above where lane markings on both sides of the vehicle are detected. LKA helps prevent the vehicle from straying from the lane by providing steering intervention should the driver not react to warnings from the LDW system.

Both LKA and LDW are momentarily deactivated whenever indicators are active. Additionally, the driver must maintain control of the vehicle by holding the steering wheel.

Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW): Carryover SmartSenseTM feature

At speeds of 30km/h or above, Blind-Spot Collision warning (BCW) uses radar sensors on either side of the rear bumper to detect vehicles next to and diagonally behind the IONIQ. If a vehicle is present in the IONIQ’s blind spot, BCW displays an alert in the exterior mirrors. If the driver proceeds to activate the corresponding indicator lights, a flashing visual warning is provided and an alert is sounded.

Additionally, the Lane Change Assist (LCA) feature scans for vehicles approaching from the rear, and uses the same BCW warning measures to alert the driver to vehicles approaching at high speed, which may soon enter the IONIQ’s blind spot.

Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning (RCCW): Carryover SmartSenseTM feature

Using the BCW system’s radar sensors, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning (RCCW) monitors for traffic approaching on either side of the IONIQ when reversing out of perpendicular parking spaces. Should RCCW detect a vehicle approaching, a warning will sound, and a visual warning will be displayed in the dash cluster.

MULTIMEDIA

10.25-inch satellite navigation multimedia system

2020 IONIQ is the first model to adopt Hyundai’s all-new 10.25-inch touchscreen multimedia system.

Standard in every 2020 IONIQ, the tablet-style system is mounted high on the dashboard, and features capacitive buttons (to match those of the climate control unit), as well as a high-resolution, wide-screen display.

The all-new user interface provides a more modern look and feel, and includes split-screen functionality.

The new system features a host of connectivity features, including Bluetooth for phone calls and audio streaming, as well an iPod-compatible USB input.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Smartphone connectivity allows users, once connected, to perform the activities usually carried out on the phone handset via the multimedia touchscreen.

2020 IONIQ continues to offer an Infinity™ 8-speaker premium audio system as standard. Reflecting current consumer preferences, an AUX input is no longer fitted.

TECHNOLOGY

Re-designed 7.0-inch Supervision cluster

2020 IONIQ Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid Premium and Electric variants feature a new, 7.0-inch Supervision cluster with a simplified design that places further emphasis on the large colour TFT LCD screen.

The cluster also features a newly modern user interface that includes graphical themes that vary according to the drive mode selected.

Rear View Monitor with Parking Guidance (RVM w/ PG)

The Rear View Monitor (RVM) system in 2020 IONIQ allows the rear camera to remain on constantly during driving if required, so that the driver can continually monitor the road conditions behind the vehicle.

The unit’s Parking Guidance function displays guide lines that swivel automatically as the steering wheel is turned while reversing, bringing ease of reverse parking.

Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Hold

The Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) previously offered in IONIQ Electric is now standard in all 2020 IONIQ variants, with exception of the Hybrid Elite.

The Auto Hold function automatically maintains braking pressure when the vehicle has stopped, to ensure it will not creep forwards or roll backwards even with the brake pedal released. The brakes are released when the driver presses the accelerator.

Manual Speed Limit Assist (MSLA)

A Manual Speed Limit Assist (MSLA) function activated via the cruise control steering wheel switches, allows the driver to pre-set a maximum speed (30km/h or above) that the vehicle will not accelerate beyond unless the accelerator is fully depressed.

MSLA also provides a warning should the vehicle speed exceed the pre-defined limit.

DRIVING EXPERIENCE UPGRADES

Adjustable regenerative braking

2020 IONIQ Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid variants now feature the ability to vary the amount of regenerative braking, a feature previously only variable in IONIQ Electric variants.

By default, the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters control the amount of regenerative braking available to the driver.

When Sport mode is selected in Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid variants (by moving the gear selector into manual mode position), the paddle shifters allow drivers to select gears as they would in a conventional vehicle.

Smart Regenerative Braking (Electric)

Smart Regenerative Braking in the 2020 IONIQ Electric automatically controls the level of regenerative braking in response to the traffic ahead, with input from the front radar sensor.

Activated by pulling and holding the right steering wheel paddle, the system also detects whether IONIQ Electric is driving up or downhill, and adjusts the regenerative braking level accordingly.

One-pedal driving capability (Electric)

2020 IONIQ allows drivers to bring the vehicle to a complete stop using regenerative braking, by simply pulling and holding the left steering wheel paddle.

Eco+ drive mode (Electric)

In addition to Normal, Eco, and Sport drive modes, 2020 IONIQ Electric features a new Eco+ drive mode. This ultra-energy-saving drive mode maximises vehicle range by setting a 90 km/h speed limit, switching off the air conditioning, heating and fans (this function can be overridden if desired), and optimising the default regenerative braking level.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

A striking new front grille design incorporating triangular elements sets 2020 IONIQ Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid apart from the preceding model.

2020 IONIQ Electric features a metallic silver grey grille insert, with etched diamond-shaped motifs.

All-new LED headlights for 2020 IONIQ Premium variants feature a modern, multi-faceted reflector type design. The vertical positioning light elements blend seamlessly into the functional wheel air intakes that house the 2020 IONIQ’s LED Daytime Running Lights, providing a distinctive lighting signature for the vehicle.

Completing the refreshed look for 2020 IONIQ are redesigned LED rear combination lights featuring L-shaped elements that complement the front lighting design.

2020 IONIQ is finished with four new aerodynamic wheel designs. 2020 IONIQ Hybrid Elite features five-segment aerodynamic wheel covers on 15-inch alloy wheels, IONIQ Plug-in Hybrid and Electric versions adopt a pair of turbine-inspired 16-inch alloy wheel designs, and IONIQ Hybrid Premium variants feature smoothly aerodynamic, five-slot 17-inch alloy wheels.

Five paint colours are available across the 2020 IONIQ range – Polar White, Intense Blue Metallic, Iron Grey and Fiery Red Mica, and the new Fluid Metal Metallic, which takes the place of the preceding model’s Platinum Silver.

INTERIOR DESIGN

New 2020 IONIQ features an all-new dashboard with a tablet-style multimedia display in line with Hyundai’s contemporary interior design language.

An abundance of premium soft-touch finishes complement a slim crash pad design that emphasises interior space, to bring a modern and luxurious touch to the 2020 IONIQ.

Premium and Electric versions feature ambient lighting that provides a soft glow beneath the air conditioning unit and above the glovebox. The lighting is automatically activated during low light levels (with the headlights on).

A new air conditioning control unit utilises capacitive touch controls in place of physical buttons, to give the display a seamlessly clean appearance.

AUTOLINK

Hyundai Auto Link is a smartphone app that allows the customer to stay connected to their car. It works by using a pre-installed module that connects the car’s computer to the customer’s mobile phone. There are two versions of Hyundai Auto Link:
