The Socceroos may not have won the 2018 FIFA World Cup, but they certainly did us all proud!
And for 3 Hyundai A-League players – Daniel Arzani, Josh Risdon and Dimitri Petratos – the journey to Russia could well prove a career-changing experience.
For this talented trio, it was an incredible achievement and honour to represent Australia at one of the biggest events on the international sporting calendar. While all three players were valuable members of the squad, Arzani and Risdon in particular were able to showcase their skills to the world.
DANIEL ARZANI – MELBOURNE CITY.
At just 19 years of age, the Hyundai A-League Young Player of the Year became the youngest Australian to travel to a World Cup and, even more impressively, he was officially the youngest player from any nation at this World Cup.
Yet these records were only the beginning of what proved a remarkable tournament for the exciting Melbourne City winger. Arzani’s cameos off the bench added speed and creativity to the Socceroos attack, with his performances drawing praise from observers both at home and abroad.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup was truly a breakout tournament for Arzani, who appears ready to take on the challenge of being Australia’s next football superstar.
JOSH RISDON – WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS.
Defender Josh Risdon started all three group stage matches for the Socceroos against France, Denmark and Peru, offering typical reliability combined with the odd surging run down the flank and dangerous cross into the box.
The Western Sydney Wanderers star formed part of a well-organised defensive unit that held its own against some of the world’s best, including eventual champions France.
Dimitri Petratos didn’t quite make it onto the pitch in Russia, but there’s every chance the 25-year-old will soon force his way into the national team on a permanent basis. The former Sydney FC and Brisbane Roar attacking midfielder, now playing for the Newcastle Jets, has discovered career-best form over the past few years and is certainly one to watch for the future!
