Santa Fe Hybrid has joined the Australian line up, bringing a refined, potent and economical third powertrain choice to the range.

The turbo petrol/electric Santa Fe is the first hybrid Hyundai SUV to be offered in Australia, and builds on the appeal of a family-favourite model that is already among the most desirable on the market.

Available in Santa Fe Elite and Highlander, the Hybrid powertrain combines turbo performance and all-wheel-drive capability with hybrid efficiency and smoothness.

Santa Fe Hybrid uses just 6.0L/100km on the official combined cycle and 6.2L/100km on the urban cycle, which makes it 17 percent more economical than the efficient turbo-diesel when driving in the city and suburbs, where the average family SUV will spend most time.

Adding further appeal to Santa Fe is a newly available 6-seater option for Hybrid Highlander variants, which brings a pair of second-row captain’s seats and greater interior flexibility to suit a range of lifestyles.

The choice of six or seven seat configurations in Santa Fe is yet another element that makes the model a uniquely practical family vehicle.

New, efficiency-enhancing aero type machine faced 19-inch alloy wheels complete Elite and Highlander Hybrid variants, setting them apart with a unique look.

Santa Fe continues to deliver an advanced user experience with the availability of dual large, high-definition infotainment and instrument cluster displays.

A clear and intuitive 10.25-inch infotainment and navigation unit featuring DAB radio is standard in Elite variants and above, and is joined by a 12.3-inch supervision instrument cluster.

In Santa Fe, everyone can plug-in, with two 12V power outlets and up to four USB charging Ports, including a port for third-row occupants.

Headlining a story of exceptional occupant protection is an extensive standard suite of SmartSenseTM advanced active safety and driver assistance technologies, with features including a front centre airbag and Multi-Collision Braking system.

Powertrain-specific suspension tunes for Santa Fe Hybrid, petrol and turbo-diesel, which were developed in Namyang and signed off locally by the HMCA tuning team, underpin a comfortable and capable family SUV that feels at home on Australia’s uniquely challenging city and country roads.

A standard full-size spare wheel and tyre gives customers further confidence to travel anywhere in Santa Fe.

“The addition of Santa Fe Hybrid, including a new six-seater option, brings renewed appeal in this latest evolution of our ever-popular large SUV,” Hyundai Motor Company Australia Chief Executive Officer, Ted Lee said.

“A favourite of Australian families, Santa Fe continues to deliver an alluring combination of style, space, luxury and technology, now with the performance and efficiency benefits of a hybrid powertrain,” he said.

Santa Fe Range Overview

Santa Fe continues its four-grade trim line-up, with petrol V6 and turbo-diesel powertrains offered across the range, and the new petrol/electric Hybrid powertrain available for Elite and flagship Highlander variants.

Santa Fe Elite also introduces powered and heated front seats, a Smart Power Tailgate and 20-inch wheels, or 19-inch aero alloy wheels for Hybrid.

The range-topping Highlander gains a, Nappa leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats with Integrated Memory System for the driver, heated rear outboard seats, a heated steering wheel, and a panoramic glass sunroof.

Highlander also gains a Parking Collision-avoidance Assist-Reverse system, Blind-Spot View and Surround View Monitors, a Head Up Display, and Remote Smart Parking Assist.

Body-coloured wheel arch cladding, LED projector headlights and exclusive 19-inch aero wheels for the Hybrid complete an impressive flagship.

Complementing Santa Fe’s expansive and generously appointed interior is an optional new 6-seat configuration.

A Hyundai-first, the six-seater option is offered exclusively with the flagship Santa Fe Hybrid Highlander and features second-row captain’s seats that provide superb comfort as well as additional interior space, while making it easy to walk through to the third row.

Other Santa Fe variants continue to be offered with a seven-seater layout.

Returning to the front, a bridge-type centre console places all the main controls within easy reach.

Shift-by-Wire transmission buttons mounted flush with the climate-control and multimedia switches help create a minimalist layout around the cup holders, and allow for a cavernous storage area beneath.

A clever, vertical wireless charging pouch accommodates even the largest of smartphones, and is easily changed out for a storage cubby.

Elite features leather upholstery as standard in a choice of black or Cognac Brown.

Highlander steps up the tactility and ambience with supple Nappa leather throughout the cabin, in a choice of black or Camel Beige.

A perforated leather steering wheel with alloy-look controls ties in with brushed aluminium surrounds for the centre console controls, with a premium black suede headlining above.

User-configurable ambient lighting with the choice of 64 colours completes a classy cabin mood after dark.

Sophisticated new aero type, machine faced 19-inch alloy wheels are exclusively fitted to Hybrid variants, joining a selection of attractive designs in 17- through 20-inch across the Santa Fe range.

These complement Santa Fe’s sophisticated look which is headlined by a low and wide cascading grille flowing into the Hyundai SUV signature stacked headlight design alongside dark chrome grille inserts.

Multi-reflector front LED lighting is standard, with split T-shaped DRLs that connect down from the upper stack. For Highlander, the DRLs perform double duties, with the upper section acting as indicators.

At the rear, a distinctive connected taillight design is mirrored by a full-width reflector strip with integrated indicators, in a clean and attractive treatment.

A unique treatment for Highlander replaces two-tone body cladding with smooth body-coloured trims that enhance Santa Fe’s muscular stance.

The flagship Highlander also features LED projector front lighting.

Colours & Upholstery

Santa Fe is available in eight mica and metallic paint colours, with cloth, leather or Nappa leather upholstery in Black, Cognac or Camel depending on the variant.

Santa Fe hybrid paint and upholstery availability by variant is detailed in the table below.

New Smartstream G1.6 Turbo Hybrid

Joining petrol and turbo-diesel powertrains for Santa Fe is a dynamic and efficient new Hybrid system, which combines a 1.6-litre T-GDi Smartstream engine and a 44.2kW electric motor, which draws power from a 1.49kWh lithium-ion polymer battery.

The hybrid powertrain is teamed with all-wheel drive and a newly developed 6-speed automatic transmission.

The turbo petrol + electric hybrid system seamlessly delivers muscular combined outputs of 169kW and 350Nm, while maximising efficiency and minimising CO2 emissions.

As well as providing a refined, quiet and eco-friendly driving experience, Santa Fe Hybrid produces more torque than the 3.5 MPi (across a broader rev range), and greater power than the 2.2 CRDi, while using less fuel on the official combined cycle.

The Hybrid powertrain builds on the efficiency advantage over the turbo-diesel on the official combined cycle – 6.0 vs 6.1L/100km – to be 17 percent more efficient on the urban cycle – 6.2 vs 7.5L/100km – which represents the driving conditions the average family SUV will experience during most of the vehicle’s working life.

Santa Fe Hybrid features a unique suspension tune developed in Namyang and proven locally across the full spectrum of challenging Australian city, highway, country and gravel roads.

“This is our first-ever turbo-petrol Santa Fe and of course our first hybrid SUV, so it’s quite an exciting proposition for us,” Hyundai Motor Company Australia Product Development Manager Tim Rodgers said.

“The petrol/electric powertrain obviously changes the mass at the front, and with the battery in the rear, and all-wheel drive, Santa Fe Hybrid has a unique weight distribution, which in turn called for a specific chassis tune.

“This gave Namyang R&D the opportunity to focus on developing an especially refined ride and handling package that complements the quiet and polished hybrid powertrain.

“Our local validation and sign-off of Santa Fe Hybrid’s suspension tune confirmed to us that the team at Namyang nailed that objective.”

Head-Up Display (HUD)

Smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay™ or Android Auto™ allows users to perform the operations usually carried out on the handset in a safer manner via the in-dash multimedia touchscreen.

Premium audio by Harman Kardon

Santa Fe Elite and Highlander feature a 10-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system that offers exceptional sound quality through optimal system tuning.

Wireless (Qi standard) smartphone charging

A wireless charging pad in the centre console, allows users to charge a compatible Qi-enabled smartphone without the use of cables.

For non-compatible devices, the purchase of a third-party smartphone accessory (such as a Qi-enabled phone case) may allow the use of the wireless charging feature.

Multiple front & rear USB Ports

Santa Fe lets everyone plug in with one multimedia USB port and four USB charging Ports, including a port for third-row occupants. There are two 12V power outlets in the cabin.

Remote engine start

Santa Fe’s Smart Key lets users access remote engine start functionality, allowing them to start as well as turn off Santa Fe from outside the vehicle.

Warming the cabin on a cool morning or cooling it on a hot day is easy, too. Simply press the lock button on the Smart Key to wake the system up, and long press the hold button to start or stop the engine.

Dual-zone climate control air-conditioning

A climate control air-conditioning system for Santa Fe Active and above ensures maximum comfort and convenience for occupants by automatically maintaining the set temperatures.

Two sets of fully automatic controls give the driver, front passenger and second-row occupants the luxury and comfort of being able to set their own temperature preferences.

Third-row air-conditioning outlets ensure optimum comfort for every occupant.

Driver Talk

A Driver Talk feature in Elite and Highlander uses a high-definition microphone and Santa Fe’s audio system to allow the driver to speak to rear occupants without raising their voice.

The system automatically compensates for road and wind noise as the vehicle’s speed rises, so the driver can always be heard clearly through the rear speakers.

Personalised profiles

In Elite and Highlander variants regular user as well as guest settings for the cluster, display, media and driving mode can be stored in discrete profiles.

Quiet Mode

Quiet Mode mutes the speakers in the rear and sets a limit on the volume through the front speakers, to give rear occupants the hush they need to talk or sleep.

Remote rear air-conditioning control

Remote control of the rear air-conditioning lets the driver easily adjust the settings for rear occupants, and brings the ability to disable the rear air-conditioning controls.

Heated & ventilated seats

Santa Fe Highlander gives front occupants the year-round comfort of heated and ventilated seats.

Three-stage heating elements warm the seats in cool weather, and three-stage ventilation fans blow a gentle stream of cooling air through the leather perforation during hot weather.

Highlander variant also features heated outboard second-row seats.

Panoramic glass sunroof

A panoramic glass sunroof brings light and a sense of openness to Santa Fe Highlander’s cabin, with a motorised sunblind for when shade is required.

Walk-in Switch

A one-touch ‘Walk-in’ switch on the kerb side eliminates the need to manually flip and slide the second-row seatback, for easy access to the third row.

In addition, an electric release in the cargo bay allows one-touch folding of the seatbacks.

Safe Exit Assist (SEA)

The Safe Exit Assist (SEA) system in Active, Elite and Highlander reduces the risk of occupants exiting Santa Fe when the surroundings make it unsafe to do so.

The system works in conjunction with the radar sensors on either side of the rear bumper to detect vehicles approaching from the rear.

When the vehicle is stopped and SEA is active, the system scans Santa Fe’s rear path.

If a door is opened while an approaching vehicle is detected, the system will issue an audible alert and display a warning in the instrument cluster, advising that the exiting occupant should ‘watch for traffic’.

The electronic child safety lock system provides and additional layer of protection, by allowing the driver to lock the rear doors via a switch, to prevent children seated in the rear of Santa Fe from opening the doors.

Additionally, the electronic child safety locking system works with the SEA system to prevent the unlocking of the rear doors when it is not safe to do so, providing an additional message advising that the exiting occupant should ‘Check surroundings then try again’.

Rear Occupant Alert (ROA)

The Rear Occupant Alert (ROA) system aims to prevent the unintentional leaving or locking-in of children or pets in Santa Fe Elite and Highlander.

The system utilises an ultrasonic sensor in the headlining to detect movement in the cabin.

When active, the system registers the entry of rear occupants via the rear doors opening and closing.

Upon opening the driver’s door after parking, ROA issues a warning chime and prompts the driver via the cluster to ‘Check rear seats’.

If the user proceeds to close the door and lock the vehicle, the ROA system then becomes operational for a 24-hour period.

During this time if movement is detected inside the cabin the system will activate the horn for a period of 25 seconds to alert the driver and others to the situation.

Santa Fe features an extensive standard suite of SmartSenseTM driver assistance and advanced active safety technologies, and protects occupants with a suite of seven airbags, including a front centre side airbag.

The latter, which is mounted in the left of the driver’s seat backrest, can prevent or reduce the severity of injuries caused by collisions between the front occupants, or collisions between occupants and interior components, in the event of a side impact collision.

Santa Fe’s SmartSenseTM suite include the following features:

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) - Junction Turning

The Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system, when active, utilises the front radar sensor and windscreen-mounted camera to detect and monitor vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists in front of Santa Fe.

If a potential collision is detected, the system’s Forward Collision Warning (FCW) function will sound a warning chime and display a warning in the cluster. FCW is active from speeds of 10 km/h, up to 85 km/h for pedestrians and cyclists, or 180 km/h for vehicles.

Additionally, FCA works in conjunction with FCW to automatically apply the vehicle’s brakes in the case of a potential collision (where no driver intervention is detected after a FCW system warning).

FCA is active above speeds of approximately 10km/h, and will attempt to bring the vehicle to a complete stop if activated up to speeds of 65 km/h (pedestrians and cyclists) or 75 km/h (vehicles). When activated above these speeds, FCA will slow the vehicle to reduce the severity of a potential collision.

In all scenarios of operation (visual and audible warning, slowing down, or bringing the vehicle to complete stop), pedestrian and cyclist detection will only occur where a pedestrian is moving at speeds below 10 km/h and a cyclist below 20 km/h.

A Junction Turning (FCA-JT) function detects oncoming traffic when turning right (with the right indicator activated) at an intersection. If a collision appears likely, the brakes are applied to reduce the chance of a collision.

FCA-JT is operational at vehicle speeds of 10 km/h to 30 km/h while the oncoming vehicle speed is between approximately 30 km/h and 70 km/h.

Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA)

BCA detects vehicles in Santa Fe’s blind spot and provides a visual alert in the exterior mirrors. If the driver proceeds to activate the corresponding indicator lights, a flashing visual warning is provided and an alert is sounded. The system is in operation at vehicle speeds of 20 km/h or above.

The system also scans for vehicles approaching rapidly from the rear, and uses the same warning measures to alert the driver of vehicles approaching at high speed which may soon enter Santa Fe’s blind spot.

Operational at speeds above 60km/h, BCA can initiate the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system to help avoid a collision with an approaching vehicle, next to or behind Santa Fe, which it deems as being at a high risk of contact due to its proximity.

As an avoidance manoeuvre the system gently applies braking to the wheels on the opposing side of the potential collision point, to steer the vehicle away from a potential collision and avoid or mitigate against damage.

BCA in Santa Fe also can mitigate against potential collisions when exiting a parallel park.

Driver Attention Warning (DAW) with Leading Vehicle Departure Alert

Driver Attention Warning (DAW) continually monitors the vehicle’s position within the lane using the windscreen-mounted camera, while tracking steering inputs, brake pedal inputs, and elapsed time since last break.

Should the system detect careless driving – such as sudden steering/braking inputs and/or inability to keep within a lane – the ‘Attention Level’ display on the cluster will continually decrease.

Should the level decrease to a certain threshold, the DAW system will recommend that the driver takes a break.
