Hyundai and Surfing Australia are launching 'She’s Electric', a platform to recognise and amplify female grassroots athletes on a national scale. It will be the very first ABB national women’s surfing leaderboard leveraging LiveHeats™ data from Australian Boardriders Battles around the country to recruit 'Team Electric'- the next wave of rising female athletes smashing misconceptions of surf.

After decades of facing tough conditions, She’s Electric is creating an equal playing field for women, unearthing breakout talent and creating a pathway to the top. While the women competing in the Australian Boardriders Battle will still be judged within their boardrider team, this new platform will also extract their high scores and performance data to identify female Australian Boardrider competitors in each event to create a national ranking. This will not only build a profile of female surfers across Australian Boardrider Clubs, but the right profile based on their performance alone.

Hyundai Motor Company Australia Chief Operating Officer, John Kett said “At Hyundai we believe in driving Progress for Humanity and we couldn’t be prouder to partner with Surfing Australia to tackle the under-representation of female grassroots athletes. This transformative approach to sponsorship not only creates a fairer playing field but ignites the imagination of young female surfers – and the surf community – of what’s possible. Together, we’re paving the future of surfing, today. Imagine that!”

Surfing Australia Head of Partnerships, Clarissa Pike said “On beaches and Boardrider clubs all around Australia there are women discovering or rekindling their love of surfing, yet many of these faces are yet to be discovered. Hyundai want to change this. Leveraging their marquee sponsorship of the biggest grassroots surfing event in Australia, the Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle, we created this exciting platform, the “She’s Electric Leaderboard”, designed to unearth breakout female talent. Tapping into our goal to support and supercharge the trend we’ve seen all over the country, particularly during covid, of women surfing, this platform will uncover the talented women that will inspire the next generation of girls to surf”.

For the first time, we have an opportunity to give women a profile, unearthing breakout talent and create a pathway to the top - inspiring the next generation of surfers. Imagine tomorrow’s female talent being discovered based on performance, and showcased by nothing else. Whether you’re from Trigg Beach or Torquay, Coffs Harbour, or Kiama, this ongoing platform is giving a profile to the unknown. From anonymity to ultimate visibility, Hyundai is giving women in Boardriders Battles all around Australia the chance to be discovered, wherever they surf. One leaderboard, one wave, infinite opportunity.

At the end of the 2022/23 Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle series, the top five athletes on the 'She's Electric' Leaderboard are named Hyundai’s Team Electric, a Hyundai-sponsored team given the support and exposure to make it to the top. This includes a three-day intensive training at the Hyundai Surfing Australia High Performance Centre (HPC) and $5,000 cash for the overall winner to go toward their surfing journey. The camp will include surf analysis from some of Australia’s top surf coaches, surf-specific strength & conditioning sessions, media training, and workshops by surfing icons, and pioneers of women’s surfing including big wave surfer & Hyundai ambassador Laura Enever.

Ultimately, She’s Electric is an ongoing program helping to discover the future of surfing, creating real and lasting change in Australian Surfing.
