A key pillar of Hyundai Motorsport.

The Rally2 program is a key pillar of our Customer Racing department. Utilising the technology and expertise gained from competing in the WRC, Rally2 Customer Racing shows Hyundai’s sporting and high-performance credentials to new fans and amateur drivers around the world.

The Rally2 category was introduced as R5 in 2012 by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), which is motorsport’s governing body. It was intended as the second tier of world rallying.

Since then, it has become one of the most competitive categories of world motorsport, hosting cars built by many of the world’s most prominent manufacturers.

Accommodating privateer teams, the category offers affordability through strict cost-capping of cars and components, while producing a high-performance rally car that is at home on the stages.

Car

The Hyundai i20 N Rally2.

Designed from a blank sheet of paper, the car is our second rallying design for customer teams and drivers. Using the five years’ experience of supporting our customers with the championship-winning i20 R5, the new chassis will offer an improved all-around package.

The design process began in January 2020 with a specialised group of designers and engineers leveraging the experience of the i20 R5 project. In doing so, they have been able to take advantage of the fantastic growth of Customer Racing since 2015, which has seen the department grow from a handful of people to a team of 60.

After an initial shakedown at our base in Alzenau, Germany, the i20 N Rally2 was rigorously tested on both the gravel of Italy and the snow and ice of Sweden in early 2021, covering over 1000km combined. This testing allowed our team to hone the core elements of the design.
