Researching better robots.

In 2022, Hyundai launched the Boston Dynamics AI Institute, with the goal of making fundamental advances in AI, robotics and intelligent machines. The Institute is based in Cambridge, in the US State of Massachusetts. As a research-first organization, it works on making robots smarter, more agile, and generally easier to use.

    Robots for better lives.

We can say robots and other types of intelligent systems are better when they increase productivity, free people from dangerous work, care for the disabled, and generally help people live better lives.

    Creating robotic synergy.

The AI Institute’s culture is designed to combine the best features of university research labs with those of corporate development labs. Boston Dynamics and Hyundai have complementary strengths, so the AI Institute is creating technological synergies.

    Integrating robots in society.

The intersection of ethics, law, economics and robotics opens new areas for discussion. The Institute has hired Dr. Kate Darling to lead its study of ethics and societal impact. She will lead a team of researchers to explore key questions on the implementation and use of robotics, impact on the workplace, infrastructure and other topics.

A closer look at two of our successful robots.

Boston Dynamics’ mission is to imagine and create exceptional robots that enrich people’s lives. One of the things that makes Boston Dynamics unique is the ambition to build dynamically stable, legged machines.

Spot

Meet Spot.

Spot is an agile mobile robot that navigates terrain with unprecedented mobility, allowing you to automate routine inspection tasks and data capture safely, accurately, and frequently. Almost a thousand Spots are already out in the world today, performing valuable work for safer, more efficient and more predictable operations.

Atlas

Meet Atlas.

Atlas is a research platform designed to push the limits of whole-body mobility. Atlas’s advanced control system and state-of-the-art hardware give the robot the power and balance to demonstrate human-level agility – making it the most dynamic humanoid robot.

Future Plans.

With Boston Dynamics, Hyundai will create a robotics value chain reaching from robot component manufacturing to smart logistics solutions. This will become the starting point for future mobility, where we break through the conventional concept of road vehicles, and reach out to places that were previously unthinkable.
